Introduction
Male fertility supplements have been around in one form or another for hundreds if not thousands of years. Today, the male fertility supplement industry is massive. With so many different products competing with each other, it can sometimes be difficult to sort the good from the bad.
In this article we will be taking a look at Fertility Blend for Men, a fertility supplement from the Daily Wellness Company. We will search through the ingredients list, examine the claims, and assess the customers’ reaction to Fertility Blend for Men. Before finally reviewing whether Fertility Blend for Men is worth considering as a supplement or not.
What Is Fertility Blend For Men?
FertilityBlend for Men is a male fertility boosting supplement, it is sold by US-based supplements company The Daily Wellness Company who operate out of Honolulu, Hawaii. The Daily Wellness Company has been in operation for over 20 years and is well known as a brand.
One bottle of Fertility Blend for Men contains 30-servings, with each serving consisting of 2 capsules. A total of 60 capsules in total. Each pack costs $36.99 from the Fertility Blend website, but it is also available from Amazon.com. At $36.99 this works out at $1.23 per serving.
Fertility Blend for Men is marketed at young, middle-aged, and older men who are looking to conceive a child. Often, fertility products aimed at men concentrate on boosting testosterone levels and nothing else, but Fertility Blend looks to improve reproductive health by hitting a number of different targets.
Fertility Blend for Men promises to help the formulation of healthy sperm, to protect your reproductive health through the use of antioxidants and provide vitamins and minerals that can help support the reproductive system.
Does Fertility Blend For Men Work?
To find out whether Fertility Blend for Men works or not, we will have to delve into the ingredients list and examine the claims made by The Wellness Company about their supplement. The first claim they make is that l-carnitine is effective at improving sperm quality.
There appears to be quite a lot of good evidence that this is the case. A 2003 study by Lenzi et al looked at the effect of carnitine therapy on men who were infertile [1]. The study involved 100 males who were aged between 20 and 40 years old, and all had been diagnosed as infertile.
The men were fed 2g of l-carnitine each day, and after two months a significant increase in sperm quality was noted. The study found that the worse a man’s sperm quality was to start with, the better the improvement.
Next there is Vitamin C, which Fertility Blend claims works as an antioxidant that can help to improve sperm count and sperm quality. A 1992 study by Dawson, Harris, Teter & Powell looked into the effect of ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) on the sperm quality of smokers [2]. The study found that taking 200mg per day for one month led to a significant improvement in sperm quality.
A 2012 study by Vani et al looked at the effect of vitamin C on infertile men [3]. After three months of taking 1000mg of vitamin C each day the sperm quality of infertile men had improved in quality. It appears that vitamin C is effective at improving sperm quality, and the most likely explanation for this is that it works as an antioxidant.
Vitamin E is also present in Fertility Blend for Men for the same reason. As a 1996 study by Geva et al found, taking vitamin E can help men who have low sperm counts to improve their fertility because vitamin E works as an antioxidant [4].
Selenium also appears to help improve sperm motility, but only in men who may already be deficient in selenium [5].
Next up is an ingredient called Dong Quai, a dried root that is often used in Chinese medicine. Fertility Blend claim that Dong Quai contains an antioxidant called ferulic acid which has been shown to improve sperm quality. A 1997 study by Zheng & Zhang found that ferulic acid can be “beneficial to sperm viability and motility in both fertile and infertile individuals” [6].
Finally, we have zinc and the B vitamins (B6, B12, and folate). Zinc has been shown to increase both testosterone and fertility in men who were infertile. A 1981 study by Netter, Hartoma & Nahoul looked to find out whether zinc supplementation could increase testosterone and fertility, but only saw a difference in infertile men [7].
The B vitamins do not appear to have any significant effect on fertility but are perfectly safe and may help improve general health.
The Pros & Cons Of Fertility Blend For Men
Here is a list of everything that we like about Fertility Blend for Men, and everything that we don’t like:
The Pros
- Contains a lot of antioxidant ingredients with proven track records for increasing fertility
- Contains zinc, which has been shown to benefit infertile men
- No ingredients that are backed up with “bad science”
- l-carnitine looks like an effective supplement ingredient for increasing sperm count
The Cons
- No ingredients appear to boost libido
- Not enough focus on boosting testosterone
- B vitamins are not particularly effective
- Uses a proprietary blend, which disguises how much L-carnitine is actually present (may not be an effective dosage)
What Are The Fertility Blend For Men Ingredients?
First we have a proprietary blend, this manages to hide the individual dosages of l-carnitine, green tea extract, and Dong Quai root extract. It contains 900mg (but no indication of how this is split between the three ingredients). The other ingredients are as follows:
120mg Vitamin C, 150IU Vitamin E, 2mg Vitamin B6, 6mcg Vitamin B12, 400mcg Folate, 15mg Zinc, 70mcg Selenium.
Is Fertility Blend For Men Safe?
Provided that you are a man and you are taking Fertility Blend for Men to improve your chances of conception then yes; Fertility Blend for Men is safe. None of the ingredients is on the banned substances list, and all ingredients are within safe dosages. If in doubt, consult your doctor before taking it.
Is Fertility Blend For Men Suitable For Everyone?
Definitely not. Fertility Blend for Men has a very specific function, it is designed to improve sperm count, sperm motility, and increase fertility in men who are struggling to conceive. Some of the ingredients contained within this product would be unsuitable for certain people.
For example, Dong Quai root extract is perfectly safe for men, however it is unsafe for women. Particularly women who are pregnant. As medicineplus.gov points out:
“Dong Quai seems to affect the muscles of the uterus. There is one report of a baby born with birth defects to a mother who took a product containing dong quai and other herbs during the first three months of pregnancy” [8].
Dong Quai is also unsuitable for people who are about to have/have recently had surgery, this is because it can affect blood clotting. Speaking of pregnant women, green tea extract when taken in high amounts may also increase the risk of miscarriage, and potentially birth defects. So if a pregnant women were to take this while also consuming high levels of green tea there would be a certain amount of risk.
However, why a pregnant woman would be consuming a fertility supplement for men is unclear! The other ingredients are mostly safe, though as with any supplement, consult your doctor before taking. Particularly if you have health issues or are using medication.
Are There Any Fertility Blend For Men Reviews From Customers?
There are quite a few reviews out there for Fertility Blend for Men. On Amazon the product averages four-stars from 89 reviews, a decent return.
“My husband had an abysmally low sperm count, but after three months morphology improved and eventually, we did get pregnant”
“I went through two bottles and now my wife is pregnant again!”
“Haven’t noticed any difference, and I was tested many times before and after use”
As you can see, the majority of reviewers were very satisfied with the results. But there were a few unsatisfied customers. Sadly, no fertility supplement is going to have universal success. There are too many variables that can affect results.
Our Final Verdict On Fertility Blend For Men
Often, we prefer to focus almost exclusively on the science and prioritize it over the customer reviews, as these are often anecdotal. However, it would be crazy to ignore the many satisfied customers. Because, unlike many other supplement users, many of the customers are tested beforehand and there is an obvious indicator of whether the product works or not … i.e. pregnancy!
Luckily, Fertility Blend for Men wins on both counts. There is adequate science behind each ingredient, and then there is a lot of anecdotal evidence from happy customers. Our one issue would be the lack of testosterone boosting ingredients contained within. One of the most common causes of infertility is low testosterone levels, so it would make sense for a fertility supplement to attempt to address this.
But ask any of the many satisfied customers whether they care? In our opinion Fertility Blend for Men is a great supplement, but it can be even better if it is combined with a new exercise program, improved diet, and a better sleeping schedule, as these will help boost testosterone naturally.
